Bective travelled to the high standard pitch in Moynalty for this Reserve Cup match on Tuesday. Both clubs have first team championship commitments in the coming weekend and thus all eligible players were not available for this fixture and 13 a side was agreed
between the two teams. The supporters who travelled were treated to a competitive game and both teams had the space to play open football and test who could sustain the hard running. Bective’s Ben Sherlock opened the scoring with a fine point on 4 minutes with his trade mark accurate shooting. Ciaran Casey operating around the midfield pointed on 7 minutes and Sherlock pointed again from a placed ball on 11 minutes. Moynalty got off the mark from a 45m kick after Bective’s goalie Gary Brennan charged down an incoming attack and parried over the end line. Bective managed defence well with Mark Walshe, Brian Hogge, David Keating and Colm Barry much involved in the play and won their fair share in the middle third with hard running and support play from Chris McGurn, Eanna
Reilly, Kevin Brennan, Simon Finn and Casey but Moynalty pointed again from a free kick on 15 minutes. Sherlock, with a man of the match display, was foraging hard in the inside line and pointed again on 16 minutes. Moynalty were now using their possession well and Gary Brennan was needed again to deflect out a goal chance and they pointed from the 45m kick and again from a free kick on 25 minutes to go one point up. Sherlock was proving difficult to contain and fired over two points from range. Pat O’Sullivan pointed on 28 minutes and Moynalty raised another white flag before Casey pointed on 30 minutes after good work from Kevin Brennan to complete the first half scoring.
Bective 0 – 8
Moynalty 0 – 6.
Bective opened the scoring with a pointed 45m kick from Ciaran Casey and Moynalty replied with a point from play on 2 minutes. A high kick into the Moynalty square was parried out and the ever-aware Pat O’Sullivan dived in to push home to the net on 5 minutes and put Bective 5 points up. However this seemed to be the spark to get Moynalty going and they pressed and pointed from 3 placed balls before the 10th minute. Bective were scrambling hard to stem the tide with all hands working hard to limit scoring opportunities but Moynalty added a further 3 points up to the 23rd minute. Bective carried the ball deep into the Moynalty defence but shots for goal went narrowly wide twice and time was running out. Sherlock again stood up to the test and pointed from placed balls after McGurn and Reilly were hauled down in the 27th and 29th minutes to leave Bective a point up. A spirited Bective were up for the win and charged forward at every opportunity and with good ball management found O’Sullivan who jinked through the last line of defence and slotted a left footer to the back of the net on 30 minutes. A further 5 minutes was played and Bective held out for a deserved 4 point win.
Bective 2 – 11,
Moynalty 0 – 13.
