Bective welcomed Intermediate Champions Rathkenny on this damp Saturday afternoon for this first round div. 3 League game. Underfoot conditions were soft but both teams, although understrength, produced a workman like performance and provided an exciting game to the final whistle. Con Smith opened the scoring with a pointed free kick on 3 minutes and Rathkenny replied with a point from play on 10 minutes. Bective missed a couple of free kicks before Sean Keating pointed from a tight angle. Rathkenny pointed from play on 16 minutes and attacked with a strong run through the middle and a fine shot to the back of the net on 19 minutes and pointed again on 21 minutes. Paul McCabe came in to the forward line. Paul Lyness, Con Smith, Luke Heneghan and Jack Clarke were gaining good possession but Rathkenny pointed on 24 minutes before Smith pointed from play on 26 minutes. Rathkenny pointed from a free kick on 27 minutes but Mark O’Brien blasted to the net on 31 minutes to leave a half time score of Bective 1 – 03, Rathkenny 1 – 05.

Bective started the second half with confidence and a well worked move released Paul McCabe to deliver calmly to the back of the net on 5 minutes. Simon Finn and Eanna Reilly came on for Bective. David Donnelly carried 50m before firing over the bar on 6 minutes to put Bective two points up. Rathkenny restored a one point lead with a goal on 10 minutes and they added two further points before McCabe volleyed over the bar from close range on 19 minutes. Fast moves with Simon Finn, Mark O’Brien, Mathew Cully and Tristan O’Neill showing their attacking abilities were rewarded with a pointed free kick from McCabe on 20 minutes. Bective had further scoring opportunities but Rathkenny pointed on 25 minutes and managed out the game to win by two points. Bective 2 – 6, Rathkenny 2 – 8.
