Bective were well beaten by a strong Dunderry outfit in this second round match of the Corn Na Boinne cup in ideal conditions, with Bective pitch at its best on Wednesday evening. Bective were missing a few down the middle regulars and other players gained experience in these positions. However it was Dunderry that showed their physical ability to win ball and from the throw in worked the ball up field and pointed from a free kick in the first minute and added a further point from play on 3 minutes. Bective got off the mark with fine points from Brian Cantwell and Marty Mulhall in the 6th and 11th minutes. Dunderry added 2 points and put Bective midfield and defence under heavy pressure. They worked a good goal on 18 minutes and added 4 more points. Bective forwards were finding it very difficult to get space and had to wait to the 29th minute for midfielder Cathal Mc Connell to point from play. Cantwell and Mulhall fired over 2 fine points and gave Bective some confidence going in to the half time break, with Dunderry 1 – 8, Bective 0 – 5.
At the start of the second half Bective conceded another early point and replied with a pointed free kick from Mulhall on 2 minutes after Mc Connell was fouled. Dunderry continued to gain clean possession, particularly from their kick outs, and worked the ball well and fired over 4 points before Bective’s next point on 11 minutes. Dunderry grabbed their second goal on 15 minutes and went into the water break with a scoreline of 2 – 13 to 0 – 7. Bective did not stop trying and encouraged by the hard running of youngsters Scott O’Sullivan and debutant Mathew Cully and efforts of Jack Clarke, Dermot McKenna in defence, Ciaran Reilly at Midfield, Paul McCabe, Mc Connell, Cantwell and Mulhall in attack, they kept up the intensity. Also the introduction of Ciaran Mc Connell, Colm Barry and Chris McGurn helped Bective gain more possession but Dunderry were strong throughout the field and added 3 more points and closed down Bective in the scoring zone but Cantwell and Mulhall found the space to fire over 4 further points to end the game.
Bective will learn from this game and understand what it takes to beat an experienced team in the upper end of the intermediate ranks.
Dunderry 2 – 16, Bective 0 – 12.
