Match Report – Coolrite U19 Football Championship Bective v Ballinlough

Bective fielded their own under 19 team in this div.5 first round match on a Ballinlough pitch in great order on a bright Sunday morning. Manager Jarlath Brennan and his selectors had an enthusiastic bunch of young men to choose from and they went into this campaign with high expectation of giving a good account of themselves. The early exchanges saw both defences on top and Bective were guilty of poor shooting and the Ballinlough keeper was not under any pressure. Ballinlough pointed from a free kick on 5 minutes. Ben Sherlock opened the Bective scoring with a pointed free kick on 12 minutes. James Donnelly, who had a fine game, romped forward and pointed on 14 minutes. Ballinlough were well capable of carrying the ball into attack and were awarded a penalty on 16 minutes which was converted. Ballinlough followed up with a well taken goal on 17 minutes which gave the Bective goalie Jack Clynes no chance.

Bective were not overly phased and were winning good primary possession with Adam Cully and Luke Heneghan in the midfield area with Dylan Kieran and James Donnelly making the support runs and Donnelly pointed again on 19 minutes. Sherlock pointed again on 20 minutes and Heneghan pointed on 25 minutes. Joey Mullen pointed on 31 minutes. Bective were awarded a penalty, thanks  on 33 minutes and Matthew Donohoe  fired to the back of the net. Joey Mullen completed the first half scoring with a pointed free kick.

Bective 1 – 7, Ballinlough 2 – 1.

Bective started better in the second half and Sherlock pointed after 1 minute and followed by a point from Mullen. Bective backs were proving to be a tight outfit, with David Cahill, Cormac Gorman and Simon Finn working hard but Ballinlough pointed from a free kick on 13 minutes. Sherlock pointed from a free kick on 20 minutes and again from play on 25 minutes.  Ballinlough threatened the Bective goal but staunch defending kept them away but they converted a free kick on 27 minutes. Bective seemed to have more in the tank and finished out the game with fine points from David Donnelly and Dylan Kieran.

Bective 1 – 13, Ballinlough 2 – 4.
